Keeper guide

What Do You Need for a Tarantula?

You need a secure enclosure sized for the spider, suitable substrate, a retreat, a stable water dish, appropriate feeder insects, long feeding/maintenance tools and a catch cup.

Choose the species first

A terrestrial, arboreal and fossorial tarantula need different enclosure geometry. Pick the species before buying the tank so floor area, height, substrate depth and ventilation match the animal.

What you usually do not need

Most setups do not need UVB, bright basking lamps or complicated electronics. If the room itself is within the species temperature range, use the room rather than attaching a heat mat to the enclosure.

Before the spider arrives

Set up the enclosure, fill the water dish, check every escape gap and make sure cork or other décor is stable. Have the catch cup ready before opening the transport tub.
