Safe Fall Height in a Tarantula Enclosure

Heavy-bodied terrestrial tarantulas should have a short fall distance onto soft substrate. A tall empty tank can turn normal wall climbing into an abdominal injury.

How to reduce fall height

Add enough substrate to bring the floor closer to the lid while keeping ventilation and door function intact. Remove unnecessary rocks or hard ornaments from likely landing zones.

Species and body mass

Large terrestrials such as Grammostola, Brachypelma, Acanthoscurria, Lasiodora and Theraphosa need particular attention because a ruptured abdomen can be life-threatening.

Arboreals are different

Arboreal species are built to use vertical space. Their enclosure should be tall, but still needs secure climbing structure and sensible hardscape placement.

Check

  • Distance from substrate surface to lid
  • Hard objects under climbing areas
  • Substrate depth
  • Adult body mass
  • Whether the spider is repeatedly climbing
