Answer
A strike is not always a feeding response. A tarantula can hit prey defensively, abandon prey after contact, or lose interest when entering premoult.
Check premoult
Repeated food refusal, increased hiding, webbing or abdominal colour change can signal an approaching moult. Remove live prey if premoult is likely.
Check prey size
Oversized or very active prey can trigger a defensive strike without being accepted as food. Offer a smaller feeder next time.
Recent feeding
A well-fed spider may still react to movement. Check abdomen condition and the last few meals before offering more.
Remove injured prey
Do not leave an injured feeder hidden in the enclosure. Remove it and try again later if the spider remains uninterested.
