Fringed Ornamental Post-Moult Care — When to Feed and What to Do

After a Fringed Ornamental moults, leave the spider undisturbed while the new exoskeleton and fangs harden. With Poecilotheria ornata, fresh water matters immediately; food can wait until the spider is ready.

Immediately after the moult

Do not touch or move Poecilotheria ornata just because the spider looks soft or pale after moulting. The new exoskeleton needs time to harden.

Keep the Fringed Ornamental enclosure stable and make sure fresh water remains available without disturbing the spider.

When to feed again

Wait until Poecilotheria ornata is moving normally and the fangs have darkened before offering food. Small slings harden faster than large adults.

Do not use one fixed number of days for every Fringed Ornamental. Spider size and the scale of the moult matter more than a universal timetable.

Remove live prey

No live feeder should be left with a newly moulted Poecilotheria ornata. A soft tarantula is vulnerable and cannot defend itself normally.

If prey was missed before the moult, remove it from the Fringed Ornamental enclosure as soon as that can be done without disturbing the spider.

The exuvia

Once Poecilotheria ornata has moved away from the moult, the exuvia can be removed if it is easy to reach. Do not dismantle a secure retreat just to retrieve it immediately.

A suitable Fringed Ornamental exuvia can be dated and kept for growth records or sexing if the relevant structures are intact.

Returning to normal care

Once Poecilotheria ornata has hardened and taken a first meal, return gradually to the normal feeding and maintenance routine.

There is no need to reorganise the Fringed Ornamental enclosure after a successful moult unless the spider has genuinely outgrown the setup or created a safety issue.
