Live Plants in Tarantula Enclosures

Live plants are optional. Use them only when their light and watering needs can be met without making the tarantula enclosure too bright, wet or difficult to maintain.

Plant choice

Use non-toxic plants from a pesticide-free source. Wash roots and remove fertilised nursery soil before planting.

Match the spider first

A fossorial may uproot plants, a heavy terrestrial may crush them and an arboreal may web over them. Leave the spider enough retreat and substrate space even if the plants are moved or destroyed.

Lighting and watering

Plant lighting should add minimal heat and still allow a normal dark period. Water the plant root zone without soaking the entire enclosure beyond the tarantula's moisture needs.

Maintenance

Remove dead leaves and check for mould or pests. If keeping the plants healthy starts forcing the enclosure outside the spider's care requirements, remove the plants.
