How to Choose Your First Tarantula

Terrestrial species are usually the simplest place to start because the enclosure is low and maintenance is easy to plan. Arboreals and fossorials can be excellent animals, but their speed and enclosure geometry make routine work different.

New World or Old World

Many common beginner choices are New World terrestrials because urticating hairs provide an additional defence and many move more deliberately than fast Old World species. Old World tarantulas demand confident hands-off maintenance and rehousing.

Growth and adult size

A tiny sling may take years to become the spider in the adult photograph. Check growth rate and adult DLS before deciding whether you want a long project or a faster-growing species.

Temperament and visibility

Choose a species whose normal speed, defensiveness, burrowing and visibility suit what you want from the hobby. A calm reputation is not a reason to handle it.
