Acrylic vs Glass Tarantula Enclosures

Both acrylic and glass can make excellent tarantula enclosures. Ventilation layout, safe dimensions, door/lid security and maintenance access matter more than the base material.

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and easy to drill or manufacture with cross-ventilation. It can scratch more easily and thin panels can flex, so catches and door fit need checking.

Glass

Glass is heavier and scratch-resistant, gives clear viewing and is easy to wipe clean. Many aquarium-style tanks need modification because top mesh, excessive height or poor cross-ventilation can be unsuitable.

Choose by enclosure design

For terrestrials check fall height and floor area. For arboreals check vertical retreat space and front access. For fossorials check substrate depth and whether the enclosure remains stable when filled heavily.

Before use

  • Secure door/lid
  • Escape-proof vents
  • Correct dimensions for lifestyle
  • Safe fall height
